An Abundance of Gratitude

GUYS! This is my golden blog post…my twenty-fifth one, in the year 2025. Cheers to that! (I rarely drink but the sentiment remains true).

Today, we’re going to talk about the word “abundance.” How can we live with abundance without having the “affluence or wealth” that is so often attached to the word? And yet, another definition claims that abundance means “an ample quantity,” which is really to give us no direction at all, when ample can mean enough or more than enough.

Basically, what does abundance mean to you. We are all conditioned to live with a need for abundance. I remember when I was living in New York all I could do was spend; I felt a cold coming on and stocked up on all of the supplies to make it disappear; I received a bonus at work and looked for ways I could use it all on clothes or yet another handbag (and I truly have an abundance of them!) I mean, I lived in New York — everyone was doing the same, living with excess, clouded by the many thoughts of all of the stores they could frequent at the day’s end.

It was only much later in my time there that I learned that I was using this “little treat” tactic to fill an endless void of dissatisfaction with my life. That I was searching for something that did not exist — and yet I thought it did, in all of the material objects I suddenly had in my possession. Boy, did I live abundantly, but I did not actually have abundance; at the end of the day, I felt I had nothing to show for myself.

And that’s because abundance truly does not need to be achieved through wealth. We can all live abundantly by believing ourselves to already have what is needed because we have what is in front of us. It sounds cheesy, yes, but you’re reading one of my blog posts, what do you expect? No, but seriously. Not enough people realize that abundance is truly a mindset rather than a physical object. It’s a complete connection of your mind and body.

And, may I just say, if to you abundance does mean the physical rather than the spiritual — go crazy! So long as you’re not using it to fill something that you don’t have internally, because at the end of the day, the dopamine just won’t hit the same two hours after you got your little treat and you realize you’re in need of another. It’s like fast food. Why are you so damn hungry two hours after eating it? They want you to keep eating more.

You can define abundance in the way you choose, but let’s just say I’m rewriting my own definition of the word. In my head, “enough” and “abundance” are synonymous. I know that they are two different things, but I feel that there needs to be a limit to the word abundance. And don’t get me started when people start using “over-abundance,” like…what the heck does that mean?

When I did my outpatient therapy program, we began each morning by listing the things we were grateful for. A simple act, but a necessary one. “Friends, family, God,” I would say. All that I wanted was right in front of me. It was during these early mornings that I learned how to practice abundance — all of the people I needed by my side were already there.

I basically write this post to reclaim the word, to take back what has been taken from us, in all of the brainwashing and the being made to believe that we are in desperate need of more. In reality, the only more – or abundance – we need, is within. More love, more gratitude, more goals and dreams outside of affluence and wealth. Let’s help others, let’s prioritize art in all of its forms, let’s reject evil and come together. That’s real abundance right there. Abundance in numbers.

Happy golden birthday to my blog ❤
